Fayva Shoe Commercial – You’ll Go Far In Fayvas

Fayva Family Shoes to close all its stores – Oct. 27, 1995

Fayva Family Shoes, a self-service shoe chain, is going out of business.

J. Baker Inc., Fayva’s Massachusetts-based parent company, plans to close 357 Fayva stores, including the two in the Tampa Bay area. Fayva has a store in Pinellas Square Mall in Pinellas Park and another on N Dale Mabry in Tampa that are expected to close by the end of December.

Fayva was hurt by aggressive competition from Payless Shoe Source, which acquired the Shoe Works chain last year. In addition, all three chains have faced increasing competition from discounters Target and Wal-Mart.

“Over the past two and one-half years, we have invested substantial time, money and management effort in the division,” J. Baker president Jerry Socol said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the investment has not met our goals and has continued to yield disappointing results.”

J. Baker said some Fayva stores may be converted for use by its other retail divisions, which include Parade of Shoes, Casual Male Big & Tall and Work ‘n Gear. J. Baker acquired Fayva when it bought bankrupt Morse Shoe in early 1993.
